Attorney General William Barr plans to release a redacted version of the special counsel's Russian Federation report on Thursday morning, a Justice Department official told reporters.

The Department of Justice said on Monday that Barr plans to release the redacted version of the almost 400-page report to Congress and the public on Thursday morning.

Release appears imminent of a redacted version of special counsel Robert Mueller's almost 400-page report on Russian meddling in the 2016 US presidential election, but sparring over Mueller's conclusions is already rampant.

"This goes to the larger view of what we think is going on, and what we think the motive here is", said Mr Weissmann, according to a transcript released days later that indicated Mr Mueller might be on the verge of discovering new evidence.

Barr on March 24 sent a four-page letter to politicians detailing Mueller's "principal conclusions" including that the 22-month probe did not establish that President Donald Trump's 2016 campaign team conspired with Russian Federation. But he has said he will redact certain portions for reasons including protecting secret grand jury information, intelligence-gathering sources and methods, information relating to ongoing cases and the privacy of "peripheral third parties" who were not charged. They've expressed concerns that Barr will redact information that is embarrassing to Trump. Early last week Attorney General William Barr promised it would be available within a week, leading many to speculate it would have been out this past Friday or today at the latest.

House Democrats have already made formal requests to see the entirety of the report, and have floated taking the Justice Department to court over full disclosure of its contents and the underlying evidence.

After Barr released his four-page letter, Trump claimed "complete and total exoneration", condemned "an illegal takedown that failed" and accused unnamed political enemies of treasonous acts.

The Justice Department didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

As Barr's standoff with House Democrats continues, at least one influential Republican - Representative Devin Nunes - has signed on to an effort to demand that the Attorney-General provide the House Intelligence Committee with any redacted intelligence and counterintelligence information Mueller considered in compiling his report.

The attorney general has pledged to testify publicly about the report's conclusions before the Senate and House judiciary committees - on May 1 and 2, respectively. Chairman Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., has threatened to subpoena the Justice Department to release Mueller's report and related documents, if he and Barr can not come to an agreement over redactions and the special counsel's underlying evidence. Mueller didn't make a determination on the obstruction charges against the president.
