They will also need the standalone app to send photos, and send reactions to messages. Researcher Jane Manchun Wong was the first one to spot the new feature under the testing phase.

Of all the mistakes and confusing moves that Facebook has made over the years, one that still resonates to this day is the decision to spin Messenger off into its own app from the main Facebook app.

Facebook appears to be considering re-adding Messenger to its core app, years after removing it and spinning it out into a separate app.

However, even if there is a time where Messenger and all of its features are integrated back into the main Facebook app, Wong doesn't think the company will discontinue the standalone Messenger app.

As per a report by The Verge, app researcher Jane Manchun Wong saw a feature now in testing which integrates Messenger with the native Facebook app under a new "Chats" section.

European Union gives May till October for Brexit, seeking clarity
The two sides said they would resume their discussions Thursday. Every British initiative to get a deal so far has floundered.

This all tracks with recent news that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg plans to roll Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger into a single platform. "We do not have any additional details to share at this time". Each service is expected to remain as a standalone app, while the underlying infrastructure will be rebuilt.

What Facebook can do is offer the Chat feature as an addition to the app while stripping it of some of the features available in the Messenger app.

According to 'Down For Everyone Or Just Me', a website which helps online users check whether a certain website is down or not, both Facebook.com and Instagram.com registered downtimes while messages on WhatsApp could not go through.

"We want to build the best messaging experiences we can; and people want messaging to be fast, simple, reliable and private", a Facebook spokesperson said in a statement. According to Wong, the same is true for the Messenger app, which she believes will be kept around to cater to a different audience than the main Facebook app.
