Israel's Election: It Is Bibi All the Way

  • Benjamin Netanyahu's rival party concedes Israeli election

This week's election victory for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu continues a long winning streak for Israel's right wing.

He said that the election campaign in Israel "is only to support the settlements and prevent the establishment of a Palestinian state so we do not expect much of the results of these elections".

Born close to or after the 1993 Oslo peace accords between the Israelis and Palestinians, and coming of age during the second Palestinian "intifada", Israel's young people take a harder line on security and peace than older generations.

Yair Lapid, Gantz's No. 2, said the Blue and White Party Knesset members plan to "make life miserable" for the ruling Likud coalition.

Trump told reporters at the White House that Netanyahu's re-election improved the chances of peace between Israel and the Palestinians.

Gantz, who entered politics last December, said that the fact that the newly-formed and little-known party gained 35 seats shows that the Israeli public is eager to replace Netanyahu's regime.

Sanctioned official named new North Korea head of state
North Korea might begin turning away from South Korean President Moon Jae-in after he failed to secure sanctions relief from U.S. Some of those reforms earned the ire of Kim Jong Un's father, Kim Jong Il, who led North Korea at the time.

Gantz's alliance, which conceded defeat on Wednesday night, however could not peel away enough right-wing votes to unseat Netanyahu.

"I'm going to apply sovereignty, but I don't distinguish between settlement blocs and the isolated settlement points, because from my perspective every such point of settlement is Israeli", Netanyahu said during a television interview. Whilst this does not appear to have damaged his results in the election, it could seriously compromise his future, forcing him to dedicate precious time and efforts to emerging unscathed from the bribery, fraud and breach of trust cases opened against him by the attorney general, Avichai Mendelblit.

Tel Aviv Stock Exchange main indexes were up almost 1 percent in late trading on Wednesday, displaying confidence in a veteran prime minister who has overseen a humming economy and blunted various security threats, including from Syria.

Netanyahu has been premier for a total of more than 13 years. The murder touched off a backlash against the right in Israel and against Netanyahu.

And as Saree Makdisi, a professor of English at UCLA, wrote in a Los Angeles Times op-ed on Thursday, Netanyahu's victory only cements the "apartheid reality" of what Israel has become under under the right-wing leader. Palestinians seek a state there and in the Gaza Strip, with East Jerusalem as its capital. Mr. Netanyahu defended the practice, saying cameras helped guarantee a "legitimate" vote.

"It is the occupied Palestinians who should have voted, not the Israeli occupiers", he said, adding that the identity of the next Israeli prime minister was "meaningless". Experiences such as these at a young age have caused them to believe that peace can only be achieved by force; something only the right-wing parties can achieve.
