President Trump reiterates he won't release his tax returns

  • Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin speaks to the news media after giving a television interview at the White House in Washington Dec. 3 2018

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin got into a fiery exchange with U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters on Tuesday during a committee hearing with lawmakers on Capitol Hill.

Neal said in a statement after receiving Mnuchin's letter that he "will consult with counsel and determine the appropriate response to the commissioner in the coming days". He did not flatly reject the notion that he might ultimately comply, but the letter suggested that Mnuchin would not hold himself to any timeline. Noting a similar concern in a recent floor speech, the Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee-who shares the same section 6103 (f) authority as you-described the April 3 request as lacking the requisite "legitimate legislative purpose" and as "Nixonian to the core".

But testifying before Congress on Wednesday, Rettig refused to say that it was his responsibility alone to respond to the congressional instruction, which was sent by House Ways and Means Committee Chair Richard Neal (D-MA).

"The committee requests the materials by April 10, but the Treasury Department will not be able to complete its review of your request by that date", Mnuchin wrote. The IRS is part of Treasury.

President Donald Trump is facing an imminent congressional deadline for his administration to provide his tax returns, but he says he "won't do it" while he's under audit by the IRS.

"So if this is the way you want to treat me, then I'll rethink whether I voluntarily come back here", Mnuchin said.

See, the President Trump appointed advisor was upset that his testimony was taking too long-over three hours-and that he had a meeting to attend.

The California Rep. continued, reminding Mnuchin that no other secretary had imposed their own limits on the length of time a hearing could go.

Financial Services Chairwoman Maxine Waters, D-Calif., citing a long list of Trump administration officials who have departed, pressed Mnuchin on whether he was anxious about being fired if he complied with the request.

It's not clear how long the subsequent court fights would take. Of course, most tax attorneys don't represent presidents or people running for the White House. New York's legislature is now considering legislation that would allow Congress to request the president's tax returns from the state's Department of Taxation and Finance.

Liverpool eye Manchester United flop Depay as Mane replacement
Depay has also been superb for his country's national team - scoring 16 goals and 12 assists from 46 worldwide appearances. Liverpool host Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday before going to Porto for the second leg next Wednesday.

"I built a great company, one of the best companies, I have some of the greatest assets in the world, I did a good job, and now, frankly, I don't care about them, I only care about the United States", Trump said Wednesday. "That's really hard to predict", Hemel said.

"I have a foreign leader waiting in my office at 5:30, okay?"

"The general public, when they elected President Trump, made the decision without his tax returns being released", Mnuchin said.

Both Rettig and Mnuchin are Trump appointees.

"We would not ever ask for the White House's permission on this nor did they give us the permission", he said. White House officials similarly would not offer more information about the discussions.

"We did receive the request" for six years of Trump's personal tax returns as well as those for several of the president's business entities, Mnuchin told a House Appropriations subcommittee on Tuesday. These arguments have been echoed in House hearings by congressional Republicans.

As a presidential candidate in 2016, Trump broke with a decades-old convention of releasing tax returns publicly. "We are confident that this misguided attempt to politicize the administration of the tax laws will not succeed".

Now, almost four full years since the infamous day he rode down the Trump Tower escalator to declare Mexicans are rapists and he was launching a presidential bid, President Trump lied to reporters, insisting "there is no law" that can force the release of his taxes. No federal statute bars individuals under audit from releasing their tax returns.

But many legal experts agree that this law is intentionally open-ended, meaning Congress still needs a legitimate legislative goal to make that request. "I'm not going to comment on specific conversations that we've had together".

"I think this committee would like to know if in those communications, the White House had expressed their desire to you or anybody else at Treasury what their views (are) or how you should act on this matter", Quigley said. The law is clear.
