European Union gives May till October for Brexit, seeking clarity

11 April, 2019, 06:30 | Author: Taylor George
  • May is seeking an extension to allow the UK to leave the EU on June 30

But these talks are moving slowly, and the prime minister is under intense pressure from hardline Brexit supporters in her Conservative party not to compromise.

European Union leaders agreed to delay the UK's departure until October 31 at a crunch summit tonight and spoke at a joint press conference with Jean-Claude Juncker in the early hours of Thursday morning.

But it offers little clarity on when, how or even if Brexit will happen, as May struggles to build support in parliament for withdrawal terms agreed with the European Union a year ago.

"I don't want to see a long extension".

"The only way we are going to get Brexit is through a party that accepts Brexit", he fumed.

'Until the end of this period, the United Kingdom will also have the possibility to revoke Article 50 and cancel Brexit altogether'.

Tusk, a former Polish premier who has long tried to keep a door open for Britons to change their minds and stay, said the delay until Halloween gave time for London to ratify May's deal, tweak elements of the future EU-UK relationship to Labour's liking - or give it a chance to "cancel Brexit altogether".

The blueprint hashed out during six hours of talks in Brussels allows the U.K.to stay in the bloc until October 31 to provide more time for the British government to get the divorce terms ratified in Parliament. "That is why the request today is to June 30 in order that we can leave as soon as possible", he told BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

"The choices we now face are stark and the timetable is clear".

May is expected to immediately head to Belgium after her weekly Prime Minister's Questions session in the House of Commons, where opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn and his Labour party will grill the prime minister on all matters, not just Brexit. One of them, Mark Francois, said that if the United Kingdom remained in the bloc, "then in return we will become a Trojan Horse within the European Union".

It's looking increasingly likely that European Union leaders will offer the United Kingdom a Brexit extension until the final days of October, but EU leaders want a review in June.

Many leaders had wanted a much longer extension, to the end of the year or even next March, but French President Emmanuel Macron mounted stiff resistance throughout the evening, eventually forcing the compromise.

The British Parliament has repeatedly rejected a withdrawal deal negotiated with the European Union, leading to today's deadlock over Britain's long-awaited departure.

Michael Brown said he has become so fed up with the Tories, he has now joined Nigel Farage's Brexit Party in anticipation of the United Kingdom taking part in the European elections.

"Please don't waste this time", European Council President Donald Tusk told the United Kingdom government in a news conference on Thursday, after eight hours of talks on the matter.

"I can't believe she has ever been involved in any negotiation of any kind at any point in her life", he said, "She is without doubt the worst Prime Minister in my lifetime and the most duplicitous - she says one thing and does the other again and again and again".

Every British initiative to get a deal so far has floundered. The two sides said they would resume their discussions Thursday.
