  • Trump administration expected to designate Iran's IRGC as a terrorist group

Iran threatened to add the United States army to its terrorism list if Washington designated the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist group.

The United States added Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) to its antiterrorism sanctions list in October 2017, but in the statement announcing the decision, the Department of Treasury emphasized that the development did not mean the us designated the IRGC as a foreign terrorist organization.

The move would come almost a year after the president withdrew from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, reached between Tehran and six world powers, including the U.S. Obama administration.

The decision, the officials said, will be announced by the US State Department, perhaps as early as Monday.

The administration's decision to make the designation was first reported by the Wall Street Journal.

Most of the documents were provided, however, and Harriett Miers, the former White House counsel under President George W. He is now expected to release the entire report , with some redactions, by mid-April.

And US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, a strident Iran critic, has advocated for the change in US policy as part of the Trump administration's tough posture towards Tehran. "The designation of the IRGC would send that message".

Jafari's remarks coincided with a statement issued by a majority of Iranian legislators confirming that the country's parliament would respond-in-kind to any shift by Washington, according to a report by Iran's state-run IRNA news agency.

"#NetanyahuFirsters who have long agitated for FTO designation of the IRGC fully understand its consequences for USA forces in the region", Zarif wrote on Twitter, referring to supporters of Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel, Iran's regional arch-enemy. The nuclear agreement envisaged the gradual lifting of sanctions in return for Iran keeping its nuclear programme peaceful.

In response to the policy change, Reuters reported that the head of the Iranian parliament's national security committee tweeted that Iran would add the usa military to their own terror blacklist.
