  • Trump Says He’s Not Concerned About Potential Espionage After Mar-a-Lago Arrest: ‘Just a Fluke’

Chinese diplomats have been informed of the arrest of a Chinese woman at President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago club over the weekend and are providing her with consular services, the Foreign Ministry said Thursday.

In a case that renewed concerns about security at Trump's private club in Florida, the U.S. Secret Service arrested Yujing Zhang on Saturday after she got through perimeter checkpoints and raised suspicions when questioned about her visit.

Federal officials are looking into whether a Chinese woman arrested at President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago club with a device containing computer malware was part of a larger effort to gain access to the president and do potential harm.

The official said the Federal Bureau of Investigation is doing what it has to do in these circumstances, when there is a foreign national involved and there is a possibility of counterintelligence or cyber security issues. At the beginning of the hearing, after Matthewman made a few announcements in English that were translated for Zhang, he asked her if she wanted to continue using the translator or if he should proceed in English.

"While the Secret Service does not determine who is permitted to enter the club, our agents and officers conduct physical screenings to ensure no prohibited items are allowed onto the property".

"No swimming apparel was found in Zhang's possession or on her person", it said.

The Washington Post reported Trump responded that he was not anxious about potential espionage, since the Secret Service does its job well. I have--we have very good control. I think that particular woman did a very, very good job.

Ms. Zhang told the agent who questioned her on site that she was there for a "United Nations friendship event" and had arrived early to see the pool and take photos.

In a letter on Wednesday, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff requested a briefing on the Zhang arrest from the heads of the FBI, Secret Service and Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) is demanding that the Department of Homeland Security Inspector General open an investigation into whether the White House has overruled the Secret Service in deciding who can meet with President Trump at Mar-a-Lago.

Democrats in Congress last month called on the FBI to investigate Cindy Yang's activities, amid concerns that she could pose a national security threat. She allegedly was told by "Charles" to talk to Trump's family about Chinese-American economic relations.
