Verizon Just Launched Mobile 5G: Everything You Need to Know

  • Verizon just turned on its 5G network in the US a week ahead of schedule

Make no mistake, this service will be extremely limited in availability, and today's launch is coming more than a week ahead of its originally planned April 11rollout (for obvious reasons).

On April 3, the company officially switched on its 5G Ultra Wideband Network in select parts of those two United States cities - a full week ahead of schedule.

Verizon announced this morning that it is turning on its 5G ultra wideband service in Chicago and Minneapolis.

In Chicago, 5G service will work in the West Loop and South Loop, as well as around landmarks like Union Station, Willis Tower, and The Art Institute of Chicago. Officially, the network is only live in Chicago, Illinois, and in Minneapolis, Wisconsin. It costs $200, while the phone is $240 (down from $480). Customers also have 5G Ultra Wideband service in the Verizon store on The Magnificent Mile and throughout The Gold Coast, Old Town and River North.

The early limitations on Verizon's 5G network reflect the nascent nature of the technology.

The Russos Wouldn't Give Tom Holland An Avengers Endgame Script
Although the records include the film's first 24 hours of presales, Avengers: Endgame only needed 6 hours to take the top spot. Tickets are on sale as we speak, so make sure to get yours at your favorite AMC location while they last.

In two separate tests that were posted within the past 24 hours, we saw one speedtest (above) hit 760Mbps down, while a second test topped out at around 560Mbps.

So, while the 5G network is clearly the faster of the two, it's not by an order of magnitude. The US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis also has an indoor 5G network. So a Verizon customer already paying $85 a month for the carrier's Beyond Unlimited plan would see their monthly bill rise to $95 if they add 5G service.

The move, which caught many by surprise, will give the customers who have 5G equipped phones access to wireless service with speeds of up to 1 Global Positioning System, roughly 10 times the peak speed of 4G.

We needed both the Moto Z3, the 5G Moto Mod, an unlimited data plan from Verizon, and we had to pay a special $10 5G service fee on top of the data plan to access the 5G network. AT&T launched its 5G service in select areas late past year, but it only made a single 5G hotspot available to select testers and hasn't said a peep since. The company will need to install a lot of small site modules to provide jumping off points for the new 5G UWB network, which explains why you can only use it in certain areas.
