Huawei’s annual revenue surpasses $100 million for the first time

  • Huawei poses national security risks, says UK watchdog

Beijing has detained two Canadians and blocked imports of canola from Canada in what is widely seen as an attempt to compel her release.

Huawei denies USA accusations it is controlled by China's ruling Communist Party and says it is owned by about half the members of its 180,000-strong workforce.

The Britain-based Huawei Cyber Security Evaluation Centre's annual report declares that no progress has been made to address issues found a year ago in 2018. "We understand these concerns and take them very seriously".

Huawei is, along with Sweden's LM Ericsson and Nokia Corp. of Finland, a global leader in developing fifth-generation, or 5G, telecoms.

Further significant issues in Huawei's technology pose new risks to the UK's telecommunication networks, a report by security authorities has warned.

The report, issued by the National Cyber Security Centre, said it can provide "only limited assurance that the long-term security risks can be managed in the Huawei equipment now deployed in the UK".

Naturally the company has already strongly denied numerous accusations and in a public letter posted earlier this year said, "Huawei has never and will never use UK-based hardware, software, or information gathered in the United Kingdom or anywhere else globally, to assist other countries in gathering intelligence".

While it found no evidence of Chinese state-backed espionage or so-called "backdoors" in Huawei's equipment, the HCSEC says it uncovered "future significant technical issues" in Huawei's engineering processes and criticised the firm for a lack of "end-to-end integrity of the products", meaning that a "true root cause analysis" of any issues was not possible. He cited revelations from Edward Snowden about how the USA monitors electronic communications.

The conclusion of the report is that if someone knew about these vulnerabilities, and had enough logistic backup to exploit them, they could access user traffic, for example.

In the U.S. and other countries, Huawei has found itself scrutinized and cut out of key markets because of security concerns. As of December 2018, Huawei had 87,800 patents granted to it, with 11,150 of those patents being registered in the US.

"The company denies that it or its subsidiary or affiliate have committed any of the asserted violations of U.S. law set forth in each of the indictments, is not aware of any wrongdoing by Ms Meng, and believes the USA courts will ultimately reach the same conclusion", Huawei said in January.

"The U.S. government is using FUD because of its worldwide hegemony", said Fang Xingdong, director of the Center for Internet and Society at Zhejiang University of Media and Communications, using an acronym for "fear, uncertainty and doubt". With that in mind, it is perhaps not surprising that the European Union-at odds with the Trump administration over trade and defense-has made a decision to ignore the U.S.'s demands that all its allies avoid Huawei's equipment like the plague.

A Spark spokesman said the company was studying the HCSEC report before considering comment.

By contrast, the core carrier business shrank 1.3%, to RMB294 billion ($43.8 billion), accounting for just 41% of total sales.

The bulk of the improvement came from a sharp increase in smartphones. This was largely driven by smartphone sales.

Huawei is already a major player in Britain's 4G network, prompting the British government to set up a system to detect the risks and deter the threat, rather than push the company out the door.

Chinese tech giant Huawei's deputy chairman has defended the company's commitment to security after a stinging British Government report added to Western pressure on the company.
