Microsoft has been pretty clear about its intentions to turn Xbox into more of a platform than a standalone console.

Microsoft has announced that it is bringing its Xbox Live network to iOS and Android. The company is launching a new cross-platform mobile SDK for game developers to bring the functionality for games that run on iOS and Android.

Microsoft has added five new services to PlayFab with the introduction of Game Stack, several of which use Azure.

"If you've watched us for the past few years, we've taken a very inclusive approach", says Choudhry. The game is running on Project xStream hardware in Microsoft's data center and then streamed remotely to the device. Considering that Nintendo's online platform is, ahem, lacking, with Game Stack and this SDK, the dream of Nintendo dropping its own online platform for Microsoft's becomes, at least technically, possible. The service requires a technology called machine learning, which Microsoft has refined through its Xbox Live service over the years, he said.

Microsoft spoke with in advance of the announcement to simply state: "Our goal is to unite the two billion gamers", Microsoft CVP of Gaming Cloud Kareem Choudhry said.

To help reach gamers in new ways, five new PlayFab services have been announced-and three of those services can have a direct impact on players' experiences, depending on how/if developers choose to integrate them into their games.

Microsoft competes against Amazon Web Services division to sell those cloud services. With this in mind, the company has created Game Stack, the new brand that brings together all platforms, tools, and services for game developers. PlayFab Party offers voice and chat services, while PlayFab Insights has real-time game telemetry.

While the lack of Xbox Live support for Nintendo Switch may seem conspicuous, having been listed among Microsoft's plans for GDC, that doesn't mean it isn't necessarily still on the cards.
