It has been widely reported that the suspected gunman in the New Zealand massacre took to social media platforms to live stream his attacks.

Police said 41 people died at the Deans Avenue mosque and seven died at the Linwood Avenue mosque.

There are now four individuals who have been apprehended, but three are connected to this attack who are now in custody, one of which has publicly stated that they were Australian-born.

He was not on a government watch list in either New Zealand or Australia.

The prime minister said the events in Christchurch represented "an extraordinary and unprecedented act of violence" and acknowledged many of those affected may be migrants and refugees.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said Saturday the victims were from across the Muslim world, with Turkey, Bangladesh, Indonesia and Malaysia among the countries rendering consular assistance.

"The University of Toronto community has reacted with horror and sorrow on hearing of the terrorist atrocities committed against Muslims in Christchurch, New Zealand yesterday", U of T President Meric Gertler said on Friday.

Beyond that, the New Zealand Police noted in a separate release that in 20 years, from December 1998 to December 2018, there were a total of 15 murders committed by someone, who had a firearms license.

Two other people remain in custody, although their link to the attack is unknown.

In Peel Region, police told CP24 said they "were in contact with leaders" in the local Muslim community relating to the attack and steps they could take to remain safe.

One man who said he was at the Al Noor mosque told media the gunman burst into the mosque as worshippers were kneeling for prayers.

New Zealand police described the footage shot by the gunman - which AFP has verified, but is not distributing - as "extremely distressing" and warned web users that they could be liable for up to 10 years in jail for sharing such "objectionable content". Friday is Islam's holy day.

"Frightening experience and please keep us in your prayers", while Mushfiqur Rahim said: "Alhamdulillah Allah save us today while shooting in Christchurch in the mosque.we r extremely lucky.never want to see this things happen again.pray for us".

Taking to Twitter to express his distaste, Kjellberg wrote, "Just heard news of the devastating reports from New Zealand Christchurch".

"There were bodies all over", he said.

Mass shootings, and violent crime in general, are rare in New Zealand, a country of almost 5 million people.

In New Zealand, the minimum age to own a gun is 16 or 18 for military-grad semi-automatic weapons.

Meanwhile, police services across the Greater Toronto Area said Friday they increased their presence in and around mosques and other places of worship in response to the attack.
