  • Air Raid Warning Sirens Go Off In Tel Aviv After Apparent Gaza Rocket Attack

The IDF response comes after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu concluded a security meeting at the IDF's Tel Aviv headquarters.

On Friday, Israeli media reported the military's preliminary assessment was that the rockets were fired by mistake during maintenance work - a sign Israel was seeking to calm tensions.

The Palestinian Hamas militant group, which openly calls for Israel's destruction, has pledged to take action against those who launched rockets on Tel Aviv on Thursday.

Videos posted online by locals showed empty streets and captured the blare of "code red" sirens, used to warn of imminent attacks.

The salvo caused no damage or casualties.

Israel's Channel 10 news, citing anonymous military officials, said the rockets were Iranian-made Fajr rockets.

On Monday the UN Human Rights Council is set to condemn Israeli military activity in Gaza and Israeli restrictions of the movement of goods and people into the strip.

Israel's military has confirmed it was attacking so-called "terror sites" in Gaza.

"We don't know who carried it out", Manelis said, adding: "The Hamas organisation is the main organisation in the Strip".

Explosions have been heard in the Gaza Strip early on Friday as witnesses said Israeli planes bombed two security positions controlled by Hamas.

More than 40 locations were targeted with about 100 strikes, the source said.

In a statement the army said it was targeting "terror sites".

The Iran-backed Al-Sabareen terrorist group in Gaza has yet to release an official statement following the rocket attacks.

Andrew Carey reported from Jerusalem and Ibrahim Dahman from Gaza.

Air raid sirens wailed late Thursday throughout Tel Aviv, Israel's densely populated commercial capital, after an apparent rocket attack from the Gaza Strip. The Israeli military said several of them were intercepted by its air defense systems.

Nearly daily exchanges between Israel and the Palestinian territory have threatened a wider escalation in hostilities over the past few weeks. Residents have little desire for another war with Israel. Financed by Iran, Hamas possesses a large arsenal of rockets and missiles capable of striking deep inside Israel. Israel and Egypt have maintained a crippling blockade on Gaza since Hamas took over the territory in 2007.

He said that while "rogue factions" were behind recent Gaza "provocations", it "did not exempt Hamas" of responsibility.

The attacks occurred two weeks before the anniversary of the Gaza border protests, which began last 30 March, in which thousands have demonstrated weekly against Israel's occupation.

"I suggest to Hamas, don't count on it", he told his Cabinet. Instead, the rockets fell and detonated in open territory.

The escalation on Thursday followed a day of unrest in Gaza, where Hamas, the militant group that controls the Palestinian enclave, had forcibly put down demonstrations against deteriorating living conditions.
