  • US prosecutors have launched a criminal investigation into the social network's practice of sharing users' data

Facebook's stock fell almost 3% in early morning trading on Thursday as Wall Street reacted to the outage.

DownDetector website - one of the internet's most used sources of numbers on outages - showed the number of complaints had peaked at more than 12,000, gradually falling to about 180 as of 11am EST on Thursday.

"We're very sorry for the inconvenience and appreciate everyone's patience", Facebook said.

USA prosecutors have launched a criminal investigation into the social network's practice of sharing users' data.

"Yesterday, as a result of a server configuration change, many people had trouble accessing our apps and services", the company said in a tweet.

Facebook (FB -1.8%) says it's resolved outages that plagued the company and its Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp services over the past 24 hours.

We've asked Facebook how it intends to resolve its issues with angry advertisers, but did not receive an immediate reply.

In addition to that, apps need to use the system file picker so that users can choose what Download files the app can access. In the future, the new file format will be able to be used to create 3D images or for augmented reality photography.

The outages began Wednesday afternoon ET and appeared to affect people in multiple regions, including the United States, Central and South America and Europe, according to tweets and the outage-tracking site DownDetector.com.

These issues arose just a short while after Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced plans to unite all of Facebook's services closer together in a more cohesive user experience.

The outage, of unknown origin, also affected Facebook-owned Instagram, as well as Messenger, although Instagram later said it was back up. The app is also funded primarily through user donations rather than targeted ad services as Facebook is.

This isn't the first time Facebook's servers have faced problems.

The outage came amid a period of turmoil for Facebook, which appeared to intensify Thursday with the announcement of the departure of two senior executives at the social network.

With the New York Times reporting that Facebook is under criminal investigation for actions related to data sharing with third parties, Wednesday was always going to be a bad day for the social network.
