  • What Is a Bomb Cyclone: All About the Winter Weather Storm Hitting This Week

As of Wednesday morning, there have been over 1,200 flights canceled in the United States, according to FlightAware, with the majority stemming from the Denver International Airport.

The winter storm is so severe that transportation officials in Nebraska shut down all lanes of westbound I-80 at Ogallala starting at 10 a.m.

Currently, blizzard and winter storm warnings are active in Wyoming, Nebraska, and South Dakota.

The Weather Channel has dubbed it "Winter Storm Ulmer", and says it's bringing risky conditions, high winds, and possible structural damage, such as power outages and downed trees. More than 45 million people live in areas under high wind threat.

As a "bomb cyclone" brings hurricane-strength winds and blizzard conditions to the Midwest, photos and video have captured the ferocious storm in action.

A bomb cyclone happens when there's a rapid pressure drop, with a decrease of at least 24 millibars (which measures atmospheric pressure) over 24 hours known as bombogenesis.

The latest update from the Cheyenne Office of the National Weather Service is now calling for up to two feet of snow in some areas, along with unsafe winds and risky travel conditions.

In the Denver area, blowing snow could cause risky blizzard conditions. She said the snow was so blinding and numbing, and the wind was whipping so hard, she didn't feel safe walking to a hospital that was just down the road.

The attack occurred Saturday at Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium and Safari Park , a privately owned facility outside Phoenix. A jaguar that attacked a woman who posed outside its zoo enclosure in Arizona will not be put down, zoo officials said.

The Lower Mississippi Valley and southern Plains will experience thunderstorms with heavy rain and flooding. Arrivals and departures that were canceled include flights from and to Florida, Arizona and Texas.

More than six inches of heavy, wet snow is expected in Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska and the Dakotas.

The weather service stressed that winds of 50-60 miles per hour or greater will be around for an extended period of time, making travel in many areas almost impossible from Wednesday evening through Friday morning.

Multiple Colorado school districts were closed.

Wyoming had closed state offices in Cheyenne, while South Dakota's governor ordered state offices closed in 39 central and western counties because of the storm.

Storm Ulmer will also unleash a powerful wind across the central US through Thursday.

"A strong cold front associated with this second system will bring snow levels down to mountain bases and some valley floors by Wednesday afternoon", the NWS predicts.

Wind gusts of 50mph to 70mph are expected across Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas, while some areas could see hurricane-force gusts of 100mph.

Because snowfall totals of a foot or more are possible in the region, the weather service said the danger of roof collapses will be high, particularly for weaker structures, given the amount of snow already on roofs.
