  • LG G8 ThinQ hands-on Palm-reading Android adopts smarter sensors

At MWC this weekend, LG made the G8 ThinQ and V50 ThinQ official for the US. The 6.2-inch FHD OLED (2160x1080) accessory can be used to augment the existing display in the V50 ThinQ 5G. LG said it's partnered with 10 carriers already in markets where 5G service will be launched in 2019, including the US, South Korea, Australia as well as a number of European countries. The design of the smartphone is just about the same and the only difference is the screen resolution, the battery's capacity and the number of cameras. It has a triple camera unit at the back, comprising a camera with a standard lens, a telephoto camera and an ultra-wide angle camera.

The new front-facing camera feature has been developed by Germany's Infineon Technologies, can scan in three dimensions - making it more secure than existing biometric methods of unlocking phones such as fingerprints.

The 5G-enabled smartphone comes with a 6.4-inch QHD+ OLED full vision display, "video depth control" in the front and rear cameras ensuring focus on moving subjects.

Notably, the LG G8 ThinQ offers immersive audio experience thanks to the Crystal Sound OLED (CSO) technology, which uses the screen as an audio amplifier. That includes a triple sensor rear setup comprising of a 12 mp standard lens, a 12 mp telephoto sensor along with a 16 mp wide-angle camera.

Though the company hasn't released any official pricing or availability information for the V50 5G has been released quite yet. Notably, the selfie shooter is also accompanied by the Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensor, which LG calls the Z camera. Users could interact with the phone using simple hand gestures without touching the device to take screenshots, adjust the volume or switch between applications. The case adds a 6.2-inch 2160×1080 display to the V50's built-in 6.4-inch, 3120×1440 display, and a stiff hinge in the middle means you can have two screens side by side. Some are specific to the device, while others are more universal and can also be used on other Android phones. It need not be charged separately as it draws power from phone's battery itself.

The LG V50 ThinQ 5G is a Dual-SIM (GSM and GSM) smartphone that accepts Nano-SIM and Nano-SIM.

Running on Android 9, G8 ThinQ is powered by 3500mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0. The company has also counted in a 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC, totaling that the G8 ThinQ supports DTS 3D Surround Sound. LG's hand ID identifies owners by recognizing the shape, thickness and other individual characteristics of the veins in the palms of their hands.
