That's 8.two percent more than Seoul contributed last year, reflecting a rise in South Korea's defense budget this year.

Yonhap news agency reported that South Korea will provide about 1.04 trillion won ($924 million) in 2019.

The U.S. military arrived in South Korea to disarm Japan, which colonized the Korean Peninsula from 1910-45, following its World War II defeat.

Timothy Betts, US State Department senior adviser for security negotiations and agreements, met Kang before signing the agreement and told reporters the money represented a small but important part of South Korea's support for the alliance. Unlike past cost-sharing deals, which lasted multiple years, the new agreement would only be for one year, forcing negotiators to hammer out a new pact in the coming months, it added.

Last year, South Korea provided about $830 million, roughly 40 percent of the cost of the deployment of 28,500 USA soldiers whose presence is meant to deter aggression from North Korea.

South Korea began paying for the U.S. military deployment in the early 1990s, after rebuilding its war-devastated economy.

Prayuth also accepted on Friday the nomination as a candidate for prime minister from his military-backed party. The monarchy is revered in Thailand, and is protected by some of the harshest lese majeste laws in the world.

Seoul contributed around 960 billion won past year - more than 40 percent of the total bill - financing the construction of American military facilities and paying South Korean civilians working on U.S. bases.

But both sides worked to hammer out an agreement to minimise the impact on South Koreans working on USA military bases, and focus on nuclear talks ahead of a second U.S.

About 70 percent of South Korea's payment funds the salaries of some 8,700 South Korean workers who provide administrative, technical, and other services for the US military. North Korea has not announced which of its cities would join Seoul, but experts say it is likely to be Pyongyang. But on Sunday, South Korea's foreign ministry said in a statement that the United States had affirmed it would not be changing the scale of its troop presence.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un pledged during an unprecedented first summit with Trump last June to work towards denuclearization of the Korean peninsula. In those, the US had asked South Korea to pay the costs of operating strategic assets, but Seoul said those do not fall under the original scope of the allies cost-sharing agreements, which are meant mainly to pay for the salaries of South Koreans working at USA military bases in the country and costs related to facility construction and logistics.

North Korea has produced enough bomb fuel to build seven more nuclear weapons since talks began with the United States, a study has revealed.

About 70 percent of South Korea's contribution covers the salaries of some 8,700 South Korean employees who provide administrative, technical and other services for the USA military.
