Phil Mickelson hits every fairway and starts well at Pebble

"(Pebble Beach) was big for that season because I felt if my putting was off, I could still win.

"I putted very well, too", said the lefthander.

It marked the fourth time Mickelson has shot 65 or lower in the opening round at Pebble Beach.

The course average at Monterey was a tasty 68.8 compared to the other two tracks (71.4 at Pebble, 72.0 at Spyglass).

"So, if I just think about it that way, it kind of certainly makes me a little happier, frees me up a bit". They are tied for second with South Korea's Si Woo Kim, who posted the low score on the Pebble Beach course, and Cody Gribble, the low man at Spyglass Hill on Thursday.

Spieth was even at the turn but ran in five birdies coming home.

"There's a few things within our family that go back to this place, where my grandfather grew up here", Mickelson said.
