Facebook Messenger users: You now have 10 minutes to unsend a message

  • Facebook celebrates its 15th anniversary on February 4

After the 10 minutes is up, users will only be able to remove a message from their own chat, which leaves it visible to everyone else in the chat. The recipient still has that accidental picture or ill-advised joke still sitting in their inbox and you may not even be aware of it.

We've all done it - sending a message or an email to the wrong person that you wish you could jump into your phone to delete.

This allows you to remove accidentally sent messages so that they're gone for everyone in the conversation, deleted once and for all. However, as Facebook became more involved in the direction of both Instagram and WhatsApp, clashes ensued, and all four left the company within the last few months.

Wish you could delete messages from Facebook Messenger? After clicking remove, you then have the choice to pick between removing the message from your own account or everybody's account.

US Senate breaks from Trump with Syria troop vote
The sudden claim rattled top security advisers, and led former defense secretary Jim Mattis to resign from his post. Trump said in a weekend interview that the caliphate is "almost knocked out".

The feature works by tapping on the message you want to delete and you get the options to delete it for everyone, or yourself. Most importantly, for Facebook, that message still remains on its servers.

The feature is available now in Canada and worldwide for iOS and Android users, rolling out today. The debate around the unsend feature in Facebook Messenger started a year ago in April when news came that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was deleting private messages after sending them.

Facebook finally lets users delete sent messages in personal and group chats on Messenger. However, Facebook says that it will keep copies of the original messages "for a short period of time", to give users the opportunity to report abuse. Once the time limit passes, you're out of luck.

The New York Times used one of Facebook's tactics to poke at the social network by sharing a nostalgic anniversary video spotlighting its stumbles.
