According to Spanish outlet El Pais, Mourinho attended the Provincial Court on Tuesday to accept his punishment.

Former Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has accepted a one-year prison sentence for evading tax while in Spain.

Instead of spending time behind bars, he will pay an additional €182,500 fine, separate to the aforementioned €2m fine.

The claim was filed against Mourinho previous year on two counts of tax fraud committed before the Portuguese left the Bernabeu in 2013 to return to Chelsea for a second spell as their manager.

The 56-year-old is accused of committing tax fraud in 2011 and 2012 when he coached Spanish giants Real Madrid.

He is the latest... Prosecutors have said that Mourinho had created offshore companies in the British Virgin Islands and elsewhere to manage his image rights and hide the earnings from tax officials.

This due to Laws in Spain usually not enforcing sentences of less than two years.

January saw former Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo fined 18.8 million euros by a Spanish court and sentenced to 23 months in prison after he accepted similar charges.

Mourinho is one of the most successful coaches in modern European soccer, winning league titles with Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Porto.

Mourinho is now without a club after he was sacked by Manchester United in December.

Marcelo Vieira, who still plays for the club, accepted a four-month suspended jail sentence last September over his use of foreign firms to handle nearly half a million euros in earnings.
