  • Iran announces successful test of long-range cruise missile

Tehran's policy is aimed at maintaining a certain cap on the range of the missiles based on its own defensive strategy.

Ceremonies for the 1979 revolution started at 9:33 am (0603 GMT), the exact time that Khomeini returned to Iran after 14 years in exile and his plane touched down at Tehran airport.

Meanwhile, one member of Iran's Revolutionary Guards was killed and five were wounded in an attack on a base in southeastern Iran on Saturday, Iranian media reported. The launch followed a U.S. warning to Iran against undertaking three planned rocket launches that Washington said would violate a United Nations Security Council resolution. Tehran claims the program is purely defensive.

Israel will do everything possible to counter Tehran's hostile actions for the sake of the country's security as Iran has overtly demonstrated its intention to destroy Israel when unveiling its new cruise missile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday.

U.S. President Donald Trump withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran in May of previous year, accusing Tehran, among other things, of working to develop its long-range ballistic missile program.

Iran has expanded its missile programme, particularly its ballistic missiles, in defiance of opposition from the United States and expressions of concern by European countries.

Frustrated Trump says a wall 'is a WALL!'
The president also took to Twitter, to announce that more USA troops are being sent to the country's southern border . Government funding is due to run out once again on February 15th.

Amirali Hajizadeh, head of the Revolutionary Guards' aerospace division, said at the event Iran had overcome initial problems in producing jet engines for cruise missiles and could now manufacture a full range of the weapons. The carrier vehicle for the satellite uses similar technology to an intercontinental ballistic missile, triggering concerns that Tehran is developing weapons that can reach the United States and Europe.

The missile has a range of 839 miles and was successfully fired in the video at a distance of 745 miles.

Iran has missile capability of up to 2,000 kilometres (1,250 miles), far enough to reach archenemy Israel and USA military bases in the region.

Iran insists that its ballistic missile program was not part of the 2015 deal with the U.S., France, Britain, Germany, China and Russian Federation.

During his speech, Mr Jannati rebuked the small faction of Iranian politicians desiring to seek a better relationship with the US. French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said on January 25 that Paris was ready to impose further sanctions on Iran if no progress was made in talks over their programme.
