  • Democratic Sen. Kamala Harris of California smiles as she formally launches her presidential campaign at a rally in her hometown of Oakland Calif. Sunday Jan. 27 2019

To stop Kamala Harris becoming the next president of the United States one of her opponents is going to have to do what no one has ever done before: beat her in an election. She officially announced her presidential bid on Sunday in her birthplace of Oakland, California, where thousands showed up hoping to catch a glimpse of her in the surrounding streets.

Her speech, carried live on U.S. cable news networks, marked the culmination of a choreographed week-long media plan that has established Ms Harris, 54, as the frontrunner in what is expected to become a very crowded Democratic field.

Complicating the launch, billionaire former Starbucks chief executive Howard Schultz said hours after her announcement that he is seriously considering entering the race - as an independent. Democrats are adopting these ideas because they poll well.

"In my whole life I've only had one client, the people", Harris said during her kickoff event in Oakland, her hometown, according to USA Today.

Harris, a first-term USA senator from California who announced her candidacy last Monday, rallied thousands of supporters at the Frank Ogawa Plaza in Oakland, her hometown and where she served as a prosecutor before becoming the state attorney general.

The Democratic primary is wide open, and lead by three formidable female senators: Elizabeth Warren (Massachusetts), Kirsten Gillibrand (New York), and Kamala Harris (California).

Boseman reply was met with a huge applause when he said, "My answer to that is, to be young, gifted, and black". But he added that they realized early on that "We had something special that we wanted to give the world".

But Democrats, honing in on President Trump's personal unpopolarity, apparently mistake the public rejection of Trump's personal foibles for public warmth toward full-scale Leftism. "That would be a bad outcome for the American people". Harris was the first black woman elected district attorney in California, as well as the first woman, first African-American and first Asian-American to hold that job. She's promising free everything.

List of 2020 presidential hopefuls grows as more Democratic candidates join crowded field; reaction and analysis on 'The Five'. Harris' skills as a razor-sharp questioner, as demonstrated by her handling of Brett Kavanaugh and Jeff Sessions in their respective U.S. Senate confirmation hearings show that she is unbothered by arrogant, entitled, and bombastic white men; that would come in handy during any debate with Trump.

The 66-year-old isn't expected to formally declare his candidacy until sometime in March. More than 100 people packed into a suburban Des Moines home of a frigid afternoon to meet him, snap photos and pepper him with questions.

The many businesses that support the insurance market could also be put out of business. When CBS "60 Minutes" anchor Anderson Cooper described her plan as "radical" in a January 4 interview, Ocasio-Cortez responded, "I think that it only has ever been radicals that have changed this country".

Forty percent of Democrats said it would be a good thing, while only 34 percent said it would be a bad thing.
