  • EVM Can Be Hacked in India? US Cyber Expert to Display Live Hacking of Electronic Voting Machine in London Today Ahead of Lok Sabha Elections 2019

The BJP has also come out reacting to the developments alleging that the "hacking horror show" in London was organised by Congress and the Grand Old Party had begun looking for an excuse for its likely defeat in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

At an event in London, a man who identified himself as Syed Shuja, a US-based cyber expert, alleged that EVMs in India are easily hackable and had been tampered with in the 2014 general elections.

His comments come a day after a self-proclaimed Indian cyber expert claimed in London that the EVMs could be hacked and that the 2014 parliamentary election was "rigged".

The Foreign Press Association, which describes itself as the oldest association of foreign journalists in the world, said in a tweet on Tuesday that it "strongly dissociates itself" from "any claims made by the speaker Syed Shuja". "It is important that the elections are not only free and fair but the voters must also believe it is free and fair", he added.

The Election Commission of India on Monday had refuted all the allegations and reiterated that electronic voting machines can not be hacked. He alleged that senior BJP leader Gopinath Munde was killed because he knew about the rigging of EVMs.

As such, before we get to passing judgments on Shuja's claims - ones that he has failed to provide any proof to back - let us look at what he said about the hacking of EVMs. The issue is whether the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), can be tampered with. NCP leader Dhananjay Munde has also demanded a probe either by the R&AW or a Supreme Court judge into the death of his uncle and former Union minister Gopinath Munde. "All you needed was a machine which could transmit at very low frequencies. we acquired a graphite-based transmitter", he had said.

The Congress is trying to defame the 2014 mandate and the Election Commission.

Shuja, however, claimed that Jio had started setting up infrastructure from 2012 onwards.

Shuja, who created a flutter, also alleged that other than the BJP, the SP, BSP, AAP and Congress, too, are involved in the rigging of the EVMs.

He said the BJP would have won Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh elections if his team hadn't intercepted the BJP attempts to hack the transmissions in these states. If the charges are wrong, take action against him.

Shuja, who said he is seeking political asylum in the United States, claimed the telecom giant Reliance Jio helped the BJP to get low frequency signals to hack the EVMs. "In Delhi Assembly elections, transmission initiated by the BJP IT was intercepted".

Says Shekhar Gupta, condemning the irresponsible press meet, "This EVM presser isn't just underwhelming, it is insulting to anybody not smoking illegal stuff". Congress leader Kapil Sibal was present to see how an EVM could be hacked.
