Blood moon set to bring lunar spectacle - send us your photos

  • The United States was in a prime orbital position and time of day to view a lunar eclipse

Weather conditions are expected to be fairly clear on Sunday for pristine.

According to scientists, this will be our last chance to see a total eclipse of the moon until 2029.

Mr Curran said a total eclipse of the Moon happened when the Earth passed between the Sun and the Moon. The "Super Blood Wolf Moon" will be visible across the USA and South America for about three hours.

The January super moon is particularly significant as it is known as a "wolf" moon by Native American tribes and early colonists, the wolves howling over the scarcity of food during wintertime in the Northern Hemisphere.

Why is it called a 'super blood wolf moon?'

We get two to five supermoons every year, while the gap between blood moons is anywhere from six months to about three years. The Moon will be visible across most of North America, South America and parts of west and north Europe and the rest of Europe and Africa can witness the end of the eclipse.

The whole eclipse starts on January 20 night or early January 21, depending on location, and will take about three hours.

May's govt faces no-confidence vote after huge Brexit defeat
May, who leads a fractious government, a divided Parliament and a gridlocked Brexit process, said she was staying put. May said she was disappointed Corbyn had not met her yet but added "our door remains open ".

According to AccuWeather Meteorologist Mike Doll, clouds are expected "over much of the western USA, but there could be enough breaks in the clouds for people to see the eclipse". Earth will be positioned between the sun and the moon at that time, and the moon will just be sliding into the very outer shadow of the planet.

The longest wavelengths form the violet and blue end of the visible spectrum, with the shortest wavelengths appearing red.

If you're watching on the East Coast, head outside at 9:36 p.m. ET Sunday to see the edge of the moon start to dim, considered a "partial" eclipse at this point.

This will come in handy because the total eclipse begins at 11:41 p.m. During those hours, the moon will be blood red but also so dim it might be hard to spot among the inky blackness of space.

To enjoy it at its best, ideally watch from an open area, away from street lighting. As a result, the moon appears to be up to 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter during a supermoon. Without an atmosphere the Moon would appear black or even totally invisible when it was within Earth's shadow. But the moon's orbit is tilted a little bit compared to the Earth's, so usually when the moon is full, the Earth's shadow passes a little bit above or a little bit below it. In essence, what will be seen is a "super blood moon".

Is it safe to look at the lunar eclipse with the naked eye?

Hladiuk says Sunday's show will be the last one for some time, so he encourages everyone to go out and try to get a look.
