Yesterday Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said the European Union assurances would arrive, but MPs begin debating on the deal in parliament today ahead of next Tuesday's vote.

Among them were Sir Michael Fallon, Kenneth Clarke, Justine Greening, Nicky Morgan, Sir Oliver Letwin and Dominic Grieve.

Of the 20 Conservative MPs who voted against the Government in support of the bill, some 12 represent constituencies that are estimated to have.

In a move that has massive trade, business and political implications, Britain will leave the European Union on March 29 when the two-year period that governs the process by which a country can leave the bloc times out, the so-called Article 50 of the EU's governing treaty.

Prime Minister Theresa May is trying to force her Brexit deal through parliament but if it is rejected then business chiefs and investors fear the world's fifth-largest economy will leave without a deal on March 29.

"I'm anxious we could come to the crunch and parliament will not have the powers to stop [no deal] happening" Cooper said in the aftermath of the vote, adding: "I think we have a responsibility not to just stand by".

Asked if he was prepared to resign to stop a no-deal Brexit, Mr Harrington said: "Definitely, I would".

Ahead of the visit, he said: "The Government is spending plenty of taxpayers money preparing for a no-deal Brexit but it's very clear it is not taking seriously the disruption that would take place".

According to the Brexit deal struck in November between Britain and the Europeans, London is expected to pay into the EU budget through to the end of 2020 during an agreed transition period.

But last night's revolt showed Downing Street there are enough rebels to defeat the Government over no deal.

There was little sign that opposition to Mrs May's deal among Tory Brexiteers had softened over the Christmas break, with several who attended a drinks reception at Number 10 on Monday evening saying they would vote against the plan.

The former cabinet office minister, in charge of civil resilience, was withering about the no-deal planning he advocated.

She also alleged her deal was the only one that respects the UK's 2016 referendum result, in which 52 percent of Britons voted to leave the EU. We all want to have a fruitful profitable relationship with the United Kingdom in the future so the backstop is just a last resort solution.

A spokesman for Prime Minister Theresa May says she told her Cabinet meeting "this is not how debate should be conducted in our country".

He said: "What is important now is to say that we should not take any stances which could damage or endanger any chance of putting the deal on and having it passed through the House of Commons and working in a way to put it back on track on what was supposed to be the timetable for the 29th of March".

The Irish backstop negotiations have been the single most intractable issue and some have suggested that reassurances on the Irish backstop were likely to include proposals to minimize any regulatory differences between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK.
