Ohio State to Retain Key Staff Members Despite Urban Meyer's Departure

  • Ohio State University football coach Urban Meyer to announce retirement

It's been a troubling year for Meyer who was suspended without pay for the first three games of this season for his mishandling of the domestic assault allegations against former wide receivers coach Zach Smith.

"Very hard year", Alvarez said of his fellow Big Ten occupant Meyer. The Buckeyes are 12-1 this season after winning the Big Ten championship game against Northwestern on Saturday night. During his suspension, the team was run by Day, the co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

The timing of the announcement was based on recruiting, he said; it needed to be announced before the early signing period opens December 19. He has a 54-4 record in Big Ten games and has won three national championships - one at Ohio State and two with the Florida Gators.

When asked if his stint as head coach of the Buckeyes will be the last of his career, Meyer said the question was "complicated".

New North Carolina coach Mack Brown, who spoke with Meyer this morning, told CBS Sports' Dennis Dodd that Meyer's health was a primary concern. ESPN reports Meyer will retire after the Buckeyes' appearance in the Rose Bowl, which will be played January 1. I wouldn't be surprised if there's minimal coaching turnover in Columbus this year to ease the transition and offer some continuity for the first-year head coach. In 2014, Meyer had brain surgery to address a congenital arachnoid cyst, but he still deals with occasional painful headaches.

For the most part, recruits have been receptive to Day's ascension to head coach.

Meyer's final season at Ohio State will go down as his most tumultuous.

In April, Ohio State announced Meyer had signed a two-year contract extension that would keep him at the helm through 2022.

But the loss to Purdue weighed heavily and Ohio State finished No. 6 in the playoff rankings. He led the Buckeyes to a national championship two years later. After stepping down at Florida because of stress-related health concerns, he took the Ohio State job before the 2012 season after Jim Tressel was forced out for lying to the NCAA amid a memorabilia-for-tattoos scandal. This has always been viewed as Meyer's dream job.

Meyer is 13 years younger than Alabama head coach Nick Saban so even with a year or two away from the game, he is young enough that he could return at a premier program and have a six-seven year stay and retire again, presumably for good.
